UPDATE | #Lakers Jordan Clarkson will not play for the Philippines for FIBA Asia | #Gilas

For the past few weeks, Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson has been attempting to secure a spot on the Filipino National Team at the FIBA Asia Tournament. However, according to a release from the Philippine Basketball Association , those efforts have fallen short.
Clarkson’s mother is from the Philippines, which would allow him to qualify as a natural born player. The Lakers, Clarkson, and SBP officials had attempted to work out a way for the young guard to participate, but ran into scheduling issues with the FIBA Asia Tournament overlapping the beginning of the Lakers training camp.
However, this does not preclude Clarkson from suiting up for the Philippines in the future, and it would appear that all parties have an interest in making that happen. The PBA will be requesting that future tournaments are scheduled around the NBA season, which would clear the way for Clarkson to participate.
The Los Angeles Lakers Management has allowed Jordan Clarkson to play for the Gilas Pilipinas Team as long as it will not conflict with the schedule of the NBA. Unfortunately, under this limitation, Jordan Clarkson can only participate in the elimination phase of the tournament. This scheduling issue is distinct only to the FIBA Asia Zone, and it does not occur in the other FIBA zones. By this token, we will ask FIBA Asia to consider holding the tournament in the same manner as FIBA Americas, Europe, Oceania and Africa do, that is avoiding scheduling conflict with the calendar of the NBA.
For Clarkson, the 2015-2016 NBA season promises to be an important one as he looks to build off of an impressive rookie campaign in which he was selected as a First Team All-Rookie player. As a second round pick (46th) in the 2014 NBA Draft, Clarkson will become a restricted free agent next summer, and should be due for a hefty pay raise if he can continue his meteoric rise.
With the door now closed on the FIBA Asia Tournament, Clarkson will focus on preparing for the Lakers training camp, which kicks off on September 29th in Hawaii.
